Important Notice for Certain Seagate & Maxtor DrivesCertain Seagate® and Maxtor® brand hard drives may fail after a power cycle, due to a firmware problem. Affected drives may include 3.5" 500 GB to 1.5 TB models, found in desktop computers and external drive enclosures. This problem does not apply to laptop (2.5") hard drives. The problem may manifest by a drive not showing up, or else reporting 0 GB capacity. Usually, the data on the drive is unaffected, but the firmware must be repaired before the data can be accessed. An article in Seagate's knowledge base gives details about which specific drives are involved. Currenty, Seagate recommends that clients with affected (but still working) drives update, or flash the drive's firmware to correct the problem. This procedure must be done with a drive connected directly a computer's SATA port; it cannot be done through an external enclosure. In addition, there are some risks involved, e.g. if the wrong firmware update is installed or if something goes amiss during the process. Contact Seagate's Technical Support for assistance with this process or problem. Although Seagate's policies are subject to change, we understand that currently Seagate is offering free data recovery for firmware issues on certain hard drives only. If you have an applicable drive, please Contact Seagate. Nonetheless, we also understand that Seagate drives made and labeled for third party manufacturers such as Dell® Computer and Apple® Computer are not candidates for free data recovery. At this present time, Seagate is referring those clients back to the third parties (e.g. Apple or Dell). Also, there has been confusion about what qualifies for free repair or recovery: Note that only drives with firmware issues are covered, and only certain models and serial number ranges. Drives failing for other reasons (i.e. mechanical or electrical problems) are not covered. If your Seagate hard drive has failed, and is not covered by Seagate's special support options, Data Savers, LLC can help. We have the special gear and knowledge to restore and repair your drive's firmware in order to recover your data. In addition, Data Savers, LLC is offering a special discount for data recovery on qualified drives with firmware issues. Contact us for specific information and a quote. |
